Abstract

This thematic paper entitled “An Analytical Study of Wealth Management in Ādiya Sutta” had two objectives which were to study general knowledge about Ādiya Sutta and to analyze wealth management in Ādiya Sutta. This research was based on study of data from documents and related research papers in descriptive analysis.

It was found that Ādiya Sutta was the sutta regarding benefits which one should get from wealth showed in the 22ndvolume of Tipiaka; Suttantapiaka Aguttaranikāya Paňcakanipat when the Lord Buddha taught the millionaire Anāthapiṇḍika at Jetavana monastery in Savatthī. Cause of the sutta was Parajjhāsaya that accords to listeners’ temperament. The sutta is pertinent to wealth management in form of Sākacchā that is conversation without ritual and all prose (Gajja). Regarding important issues were wealth acquisition, wealth spending and benefits.

Regarding wealth management, the Ādiya Sutta showed that wealth is important for well-living, happiness and comfort to live, developing qualities of life and basing to attain the better life-goals. Although wealth is useful, it can be harmful if one manages wealth in wrong ways. Therefore, one should manage wealth rightly, that is, acquisition with diligence in ethical ways, in other words, right livelihood according to Kusala-kammapatha 10. Then, spending for oneself and others (people in Disā 6) one lives in happiness and comfort. Benefits by managing wealth rightly were gaining house-life happiness 4 and achieving both life-goals in this life and the life to come.  After death, one will be born in heaven. In regards to this there are the two exemplification of person in the Buddhist Era (the millionaire Anāthapiṇḍika) and a person in the present time (Dr.Boonyong Vongvanij) for showing clearly in wealth management.
